The Winnipeg Sharks are the 2013-14 City Midget champions.
The Sharks completed a championship series sweep with a 7-4 win over the Winnipeg Monarchs on Thursday night at the MTS Iceplex.
Nate Hooper recorded a hat trick for the Sharks, including the game sealer on an empty net goal with 1:09 left in the game.
They took advantage of some undisciplined Monarchs penalties and finished the night 4-for-8 on the power play. The Monarchs also had their power play working well, going 2-for-3 with the man advantage.
The game was tied at two after 20 minutes of play and in the second, the Monarchs jumped out in front. Shortly after their power play had ended, the Monarchs scored when Jordan Martin squeaked one past Nicholas Holben, giving them a 3-2 lead.
The Sharks would grab the lead before the period expired on a pair of power play goals in the final five minutes. First, it was Hooper tucking one past Ryan Hall following a barrage of scoring chances. Then, with 36 seconds left, Tanner Aschenbrener walked into the Monarchs zone and ripped a slap shot past Hall to put the Sharks in front for the first time since the first period.
In the third, the Sharks would add to their lead. After the puck was mishandled by the Monarchs defence at the blue line, Jordan Young streaked in on a breakaway. He made a nice move on Hall and slid the puck five hole to put the Sharks up by two. Then at the 9:19 mark, Hooper scored his second of the game after stealing the puck in the neutral zone and flipping a backhander past Hall.
Connor Bowey cut the lead back to two with 5:48 left after his slap shot beat Holben but the Monarchs couldn't get any closer. Hooper's empty netter finished the scoring and the Sharks would take the series in four games.
