The Winnipeg Sharks have grabbed back sole possession of first place in the City Midget league with a win on Sunday night.
The Sharks hung on for a 2-1 win over the Interlake Lightning in Stonewall to put them two points up on the Winnipeg Warriors for top spot in the City Midget standings.
The win makes it five straight victories for the Sharks. Since a mini two-game losing streak in mid-January, the Sharks have outscored their opponents 29-7 on this five game streak.
With three minutes left in the opening frame, Nicholas Kowalski scored to put the Sharks on the board first. Kowalski's 12th goal of the season drew assists from Jordan Young and Garrett Kuklica.
The Sharks added to their lead five minutes into the second period when Ryan Sinclair beat Lightning goaltender Nathan Cvar for his 12th of the season to give Winnipeg a two goal cushion.
But in the final minute, Interlake was able to cut the deficit back to one on a goal from the red hot Devun Groot. It was the ninth goal of the season for Groot and his fourth in five games.
The Lightning were able to kill off back-to-back minor penalties in the first chunk of the third period and would receive their best chance to tie the game in the late stages of the game when Sharks defenceman Eric Lavoie was sent off for charging. However, they weren't able to get another goal past Winnipeg goaltender Nicholas Holben, who improved to 12-3 with the win.
Interlake's next action is Tuesday night when they host the Winnipeg Monarchs in Stonewall.
Meanwhile, the race for first place in the City Midget standings will hit a pivotal point on Saturday when the Sharks and Warriors meet at 5 p.m. at the Notre Dame Recreational Centre.
Both teams will have four games left on their schedules when they meet each other for the final time in the regular season.
