A four goal third period led the way for the Winnipeg Hawks as they came back to defeat the Winnipeg Sharks 7-4 on Thursday at the MTS Iceplex in City Midget action.
Jay Muller scored twice for the Hawks (10-14-1-2), who moved into a tie for third place with Eastman. Meanwhile, the Sharks dropped to 20-5-0-0 and sit two points back of the Winnipeg Warriors for first place.
The Hawks got things started quickly in the first period. Just 14 seconds into the game, Muller put the Hawks up and just over a minute later, Colby Dudek beat Sharks goalie Mitchel Adamyk with a slapshot from the top of the circles for his first goal of the year to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead.
The Sharks responded midway through the period on a 5-on-3 power play when all-star Ryan Sokolski striked with his 12th goal of the year. In the second, the Sharks continued to set the pace and take the lead with a pair of goals 22 seconds apart.
Nolan Richards' 17th of the season tied the game before Nate Hooper gave the Sharks the lead. The two sides would trade goals before the horn expired for the second intermission and the Sharks headed to the dressing room leading 4-3.
But the Hawks would take control of the game for good in third, scoring three times in a span of less than two minutes to go ahead for good. Sean Loutit scored at 13:32 to tie the game before Blaze Bezecki notched the eventual game winner a minute later.
Muller would provide an insurance marker with his second of the game to put the Hawks up 6-4 before Adam Thurlbeck would cap the scoring with an empty net goal, sending the Hawks on their way with a win.
Each team will now face the Winnipeg Monarchs in their next game. The Sharks will play them on Sunday, January 19 at the Iceplex at 1:15 while the Hawks will meet them at the Iceplex on Thursday night.
