It wasn't the way the Winnipeg Bantam 2 Sharks wanted to head into the Christmas break.
The Sharks dropped a pair of games on the weekend in Brandon, including a 6-4 loss to the Wheat Kings on Saturday afternoon.
The loss keeps the Sharks (5-11-0-1) in last place in the Bantam 2 standings, a point behind the Hawks for fourth. Meanwhile, the Wheat Kings (7-10-0-1) have now won three straight and sit in third with 15 points.
Coming off an overtime loss on Friday, the Sharks opened the scoring on Saturday with five minutes left in the opening period. Matthew Myrowich cut through the Brandon zone and ripped a shot off the post and in to put the Sharks up 1-0.
But with less then a minute left in the opening frame, the Wheat Kings would tie it when Tate Popple beat Sharks goaltender Jordan Hildebrand on a wraparound attempt. The Sharks would end the period in penalty trouble and give the Wheat Kings 90 seconds of 5-on-3 hockey to start the second.
28 seconds into the second, it would be Popple tipping in a point shot past a screened Hildebrand to give Brandon a 2-1 lead but that score would be short lived. Soon after the final Sharks penalty expired, Jordan Kozak dropped a pass for Michael King who snapped it in to tie it at a pair.
The Sharks would take a lead at 3-2 after a Codey Behun goal but the Wheat Kings would reply almost instantly to regain control of the game. 20 seconds after Behun's goal, Ryan Kokorudz would score for Brandon and a minute later, Jaymes Knee beat Hildebrand to put the Wheat Kings back out in front 4-3. From there, they would hang on for their third straight victory.
Winnipeg AAA Hockey will resume their league schedule on January 2 with three games on the slate, including the Bantam 2 Sharks as they host the second place Monarchs at the East End Arena at 8:15 p.m.
