On a beautiful October day the Brandon Wheat Kings pulled
into the East End Arena to face the Winnipeg Warriors in Midget AAA action. This
would be only the third game this year for the Warriors so Glen Burkes charges
were ready to play from the first drop of the puck.
An early Brandon penalty at 17:42 of the first period
resulted in a Warrior goal by Sean Higgins with assists from Marc Lavergne and
Brady Fostey. Shortly following the first goal the Warriors came close to
tallying their second of the night when Yanick Tetreault picked off a pass in
the neutral zone but an outstanding save by Brandon goaltender Darris Hardern
kept the score at 1- 0 . After sustained pressure on another Warrior power play
Danick Leveque scored at 9:18 with assists on the goal going to Brody Fostey and
Curtis Houlden. At 2:55 of the period a Warriors penalty sent the Wheat Kings to
the man advantage and the home side goaltender Luke Sirant was called upon to
make a number of good stops including one outstanding save on a deflection with
44 seconds remaining in the period. The Warriors controlled most of the play and
territorial advantage, outshooting the Wheat Kings and heading into the
intermission up by a pair.
